Safe Sport Policy

Consistent with the United States Curling Association, The Coyotes Curling club is committed to encouraging participation, the pursuit of excellence, and providing the best competitive experience for curlers at all levels of the sport. In order to create a safe and positive environment in which curlers can excel, the USCA promotes good sportsmanship and encourages qualities of mutual respect, courtesy, and tolerance. Abuse or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.

In particular, the Coyotes Curling Club is dedicated to ensuring that youth athletes are provided protection from sexual, verbal or physical abuse and that they will have opportunities to participate in curling in a safe and positive environment.

The following policies are meant to take effect on February 1, 2019 with the intention of having all required participants completing their training as early as possible. No adult may participate in activities involving minor athletes until SafeSport Compliance is achieved.

For the purposes of this document the following terms apply;

a) SafeSport, SafeSport Training, Training and Child Abuse Prevention Training refers to the preferred child abuse prevention training as directed by the United States Curling Association (USCA). At January 1, 2019 that training is the training which is provided by the S. Center for SafeSport (  If the USCA directs that a different training is to be used The Coyotes Curling Club will so direct its members.

b) SafeSport Compliant, SafeSport Compliance refers to completion of the USCA directed training and USCA directed background check.

c) Minor Athlete refers to any participant under the age of 18.

d) Adult refers to any participant 18 years of age or older.

All adults (18 and over) who are members of our club, volunteer at our club, or are hired to work at our club and have regular contact with or authority over amateur athletes (participants) who are minors are required to complete child abuse prevention training.

A.  While all members are encouraged to take the training, the following adult participants are required to take the training;

1.) Executive board Members
2.) Board Members
3.) Certified USCA Instructors and Coaches at all levels
4.) Uncertified Instructors and Coaches who wish to instruct minor athletes
5.) Committee Chairpersons for Skills & Development, Leagues, Membership, Events, Women’s
6.) League conveners of any leagues that permit minor athletes
7.) Any adult that coordinates youth curling activities, leagues, bonspiels or transportation
8.) All employees, contract employees and curling activity contractors

B. Any adult required to take the training will;

1.) Complete and pass all sections of the required training
2.) Submit proof of successful completion to the Chairperson of the Membership committee. (Note: any person not required to take the training may complete the training voluntarily and submit their proof of completion)


The Executive Committee of the Board will ensure that procedures are in place to ensure the following policies are enforced. A. Participation

1.) All ‘open’ Learn to Curl events must have at least one SafeSport compliant instructor at the event. If is known that there will be multiple minor participants, there must be additional SafeSport compliant instructors at the event to satisfy a ratio of 4 minors to 1 SafeSport compliant instructor.
2.) Corporate/Private event organizers will ascertain if minors will be present at the event. If it is determined that minors will be present, there must be SafeSport compliant instructors at the event to satisfy a ratio of 4 minors to 1 SafeSport compliant instructor.
3.) All persons conducting private lessons, coaching, training, transportation, supervision of minor Athletes must be SafeSport compliant.
4.) League conveners will ensure that any team in the league that has a minor athlete will also have either an adult that has completed the training or a parent/legal guardian of the minor athlete.
5,) All persons conducting private lessons, coaching, training, transportation, supervision of minor Athletes must be SafeSport compliant.
6.) The Membership Committee will make the SafeSport Compliant certifying documents/lists available to all club members responsible for coordinating, supervising, conducting or assisting at any activity that may permits minor athlete participation.

B. Education

1.) The person(s) responsible for maintaining any/all club websites will build a SafeSport Compliance web page which will contain, as a minimum;

A. Participating adults who learn of information that gives reason to suspect that a child has suffered an incident of child abuse, including sexual abuse, MUST make a report to law enforcement and the U.S. Center for SafeSport within 24 hours.
B. Individuals who choose not to report information about which they have become aware face a potential fine and imprisonment of up to one year
